Dear Parents, We had a wonderful learning experience with Mrs. Fety (Ms. Fety's mom). She exposed the students to many types of baskets, as well as sharing the history of this area and what resources were available for the Molala Indians to use. (Yes, the spelling of the tribe is correct). She shared skills required for basket weaving. The students learned how to create cordage and three different styles of weaving- twining, plaiting and coiling. We stepped outside to collect materials from our school yard. The end of the study included each child using his/her own loom to create a natural weaving of their own. It was a wonderful experience. We have a busy week ahead. Tuesday at 8:45 we will be loading cars to visit the Molalla Area Historical Society. They have many exciting activities for us to do. It should be a great learning experience. However, we are still short a few drivers for the trip. If you have the time available, have turned in your background check, and are willing to drive, please let me know. All you will need to do is submit a copy of your driver's license and insurance card to the office and you are all set. On Tuesday afternoon we will be having a Halloween Celebration. Students are welcome to bring their costumes in a bag to put on OVER their clothes. Our room parents have a wonderful party planned for our class. Thanks to all who have been part of making this event happen. Wednesday is Roots Day. Students will participate in several stations exposing them to learning about the outdoors. We will also be doing our part in this day of outdoor celebration by helping to put our garden to rest. Our job is in the pollinator garden. We will be extracting plants that don't belong there and putting bark around the area to help control weeds. The picture at the top is of the community our class created. Students worked together in their groups to plan out and build the town. Each committee had it's own purpose. The greatest part of the project was watching how proud they were of what they had created! As you can see, much is happening. Please remember to send coats daily with your child and boots if you haven't already. We love to go outside and it is best if children are dressed appropriately.

10-19-18 Dear Huckleberry South Families, It’s been a busy week in the Huckleberry South Classroom. Our students have been discovering places in their community and completing their at-home Community booklets, which are due on Tuesday. With the knowledge they have gained from this assignment and the activities done at school, the students are creating their own town. There are three committees for this project. The first is the geography committee. It's job is to create a beautiful landscape on which we will put our town. The second is the infrastructure committee. Afternoons have, and will continue to be, warm for at least the next week, but mornings are cool. PLEASE be sure your child has a plain colored, dress code approved sweatshirt to wear in the classroom. I like the classroom to be cool, frequently adding fresh air, in order to keep us all alert. Several students have been without coats altogether which leaves them unprepared for our cool morning recess. The goal is to keep everyone healthy and warm as we approach the months ahead. Lyndi Laib is working towards getting us ready for our upcoming field trip to the Molalla Historical Society on Tuesday, October 30th from 9-12:00. If you would like to be part of this event please contact her for more information. Our Halloween celebration will be on Tuesday, October 30th from 2:15- 2:55. I know an email was sent to parents about this event. Please remember that students are to bring their costumes in a bag to put OVER THEIR CLOTHES just before the party. No one will be changing in the bathrooms. I look forward to a wonderful party put on by our room parents. On Friday, the Trillium and Huckleberries welcomed the Molalla Fire Department. They talked to our students about fire safety and showed a couple of videos of themselves at work. The students especially enjoyed seeing Sparky, the fire dog, and one of the firefighters dressed in her complete firefighting gear. This visit is one more way students are learning about jobs that make up our community. Dear Families,
The Huckleberry South class did a fantastic job running at the Jog-A-Thon. Students ran the entire half hour. After the run, they were rewarded with a glow in the dark charm and treat. All students went home with a 3 by 5 card that had the number of laps they ran on it. If your family participated in getting pledges, please turn in the money by October 11th. Thanks for helping us raise money to add exciting equipment for the students to use on the playground. To coincide with our unit on Communities, on October 30th from 9-12, our class will be visiting the Molalla Historical Society. This visit, with its many hand on elements, will enable students to gain a greater appreciation for their own community and its origins. They will also note the componn |
