Hello Huckleberry South Families,
Thanks to all who came and made our school community BBQ and Math Night such a success. It seemed fun was had by all. Parents, if you have any questions about our math curriculum please ask! Corrections!!! Our library day is not on Friday, but Thursday! Sorry for the mistake. Students can bring books back anytime before or on that day. In order to check out new books, previously checked out books must be returned. Our exploration into communities is in full swing. We have built a home and city cooperatively with blocks, explored birds-eye view for maps and examined how perspective is reflected in creating maps. They have all developed into cartographers as they map our classroom. After completing this project, students will brainstorm the definition of what makes a community, based on their experience of working together as a class.

Hello Huckleberry South Families!
We are approaching the end of the first month of school and our routines are pretty well set. We are getting deeper into assessments which enables us to know how best to meet your child’s needs academically. Most work is kept at school, but we will be sending home some practice sheets students do during choice and/or for reinforcement of concepts introduced. Next Wednesday morning, September 26th, both Huckleberry classes will be tie dying t-shirts for the jog-a-thon. If you would like to help with the process please let me know by email. The first four lucky parents who email me will be able to help! All others can help with another activity in the future. I will let those who ARE helping know the details by email. The school BBQ and Math Night will be a lot of fun and we are hoping all will come. The BBQ is from 5:15- 6:15 Thursday, September 27th. The boosters will be providing food. At 6:30 students and parents will go to the classroom and enjoy fun math activities together. Parents, come experience some of what your child does daily in math. See what they are learning and how they learn it. It will be both fun and informative. Enjoy your weekend as we welcome in fall! Mrs. Harris Dear Huckleberry South Families,
We have just completed our first full week of school and are really growing as a community. I see students “taking care of each other” as they open up a space in morning meeting and invite a classmate to sit next to them. “Working thoughtfully” is best witnessed as students get their assignment and start right to work. After each math class, students “quickly clean-up their supplies and put them away on their own. My favorite job this year so far is the human vacuum. Boy does this class know how to “take care of our space”. With the weather changing so quickly, it’s important that students have a raincoat and boots. We go outside for fresh air and to get the wiggles whether it rains or shines! Remember to label all of your child’s clothes to ensure they get returned home. Please note, we have a schedule change in Huckleberry South. Library is now on Friday at 1:00. Children may bring their books back before Friday if they are finished early with them. Our specialist has been doing wonderful things in their classes. Please check their blogs and see what your child has been doing. Asking specific questions about their day can be a wonderful conversation starter at the dinner table. We have had a great week. Students are beginning to act and feel like a community. It is rewarding to see them take care of each other, take care of our materials and spaces. Next week we will continue to work towards building a solid community and continue assessments as we add more academics. Today I have some housekeeping items to pass on to you.

The start of school has come and gone and we, as a class, are getting to know each other and the workings of the classroom. Learning about our community and the systems in place that help it run smoothly will enable us to learn more naturally. I am enjoying getting to know each child’s unique qualities. Matching the right child to each parent continues to be my goal. Please be patient with me as I have many names and faces to learn. For those of you who were unable to attend the Parent’s Night, I have several handouts that will help you navigate the year ahead. Please stop by and pick up the forms or send me an email and I will put them in your child’s red folder. Some of the highlights of the week have been- watching a group of students work together to find the easiest way to align themselves in order to be counted accurately. It took awhile, but they came up with two lines of equal number, one standing next to another kneeling. It wasn’t what I would have directed, but the beauty of it was that it was the student’s idea and a very ingenious way to problem solve. Another fun activity was when each student worked with a partner to form numbers. We had whole bodies forming numbers on the ground, small numbers formed by fingers and numbers formed by children standing tall. A lot of laughter could be heard. We are off to a great start! I look forward to getting to know all of the Huckleberry South families and working together to make this the best year ever! Don’t hesitate to contact me with thoughts, concerns and wonderful stories about our class from your children. Looking forward to the days ahead! Dainette Harris |
